Are Carries Hurting Your Training?

Loaded carries CAN be a great core exercise, but far too often they are prescribed to people before they are actually ready to benefit from them in their training. If not determined that people are ready for carries, they can actually lead to issues in the knees, low back, and even shoulders. During this presentation coaches will learn that gait as a movement pattern is one of the most versatile and important patterns to create foundations and progress properly. We will also cover easy to use screens to determine if someone possesses proper gait and how we can target specific solutions that unlock better functional strength and movement ability.

How To Develop “Agile” Strength

Strength training and its protocols have been well vetted and defined over many years. They have become a staple in our programs for good reason. Movement based strength training has produced extremely strong and stable farm kids, however this approach has only been reserved for tasks that usually happen outside of the gym. In this workshop, learn why and how biology is well suited for momentum based strength training, and how one can incorporate this training into a well-balanced programming approach. Agile strength comes from moving the body in a multitude of purposeful tasks with load and momentum, just like back on the farm.

Owning Your Mobility

Static stretching is just so out of fashion. Why? Your mobility work should be just that….work. If it’s easy, then are you really improving your usable range of motion? True mobility requires neuromuscular control and that’s why we strongly believe that the application of isometrics is a missing component to achieving that goal. You need to be able to apply force in any position or shape that your body requires in order to truly own your range of motion. In this session, come experience the significant difference between passive and active applications so you can own your mobility, not just rent the space. (Hands-On Only)

Structural Bias and Position: Two Important and Often Overlooked Variables When Trying to Improve Mobility

Human movement is complex. When trying to influence movement, the more variables we can consider, the more likely we have a favorable outcome. If structure follows function, then why do we often overlook skeletal structure and the associated archetypes as an influence on human movement, specifically mobility? Furthermore, how does the position (relationship of one joint to the next) influence the range of motion of joints? In this lecture and hands on, we explore both concepts in an effort to identify more pieces of the mobility and therefore movement puzzle.

The Honey B’s: Movement Made Sweeter By Keeping Things Simple, Memorable and Fun

Let’s face it, we are in the age of too much information and too much to do. This is especially true in the area of fitness and wellness. All too often, people attach to the idea that fitness is too complicated and complex and thus, rarely follow thru on their regimens. As consumers, we are made to believe that we need apps, fitness trackers, subscription services, mechanical mirrors, this supplement, that exercise tool, etc to be successful in our fitness journey. When in actuality we need more of the K.I.S.S. (Keep it sweet and simple) Principal. Truth is, most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complicated; therefore, simplicity should be a key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided.

Introducing the Honey B’s: Breathing, Balancing, Bending and Bouncing. This session will empower you and your clients to not just add knowledge, but most importantly, TAKE ACTION OFTEN! More than just simplicity, and in authentic FMS form, we will dive deep into the corrective nature of these fundamentals; And learn why the B’s are the best practices for youth and senior populations. Become a master of the B’s as we will explore and layer in the concepts of stability vs mobility, asymmetries, games, timing and tempo, exercise selection, progressions and regressions, motor control and kinesthetic awareness. Finally! A system designed for follow thru.

Forget the Muscles…Follow the Bones!

It is not the fault of the glute medius! We have been chasing muscles and blaming them for being weak or inhibited far too long. What if the nervous system needed them to behave that way in order to avoid perceived harm or deal with past injuries? What if we focus on re-educating the nervous system with proper joint mechanics? Wouldn't that encourage all of the surrounding tissues to behave properly? Understanding how the skeletal system moves against gravity, and how one joint motion is coupled to another, reveals much about the surrounding tissue, and an athlete's functional ability. It can also provide insight to compensatory patterns that increase the chance of non-contact injuries or are the underlying factors to recurring injuries. That is what this presentation is all about. Get to know the skeleton, and how it behaves in motion with gravity, so you can get a comprehensive view of how all of the muscles should operate. With this concept you will have the potential to create you own assessment with every exercise in your library, and then do something about it.

10 Mechanical Load Management Strategies Optimizing the 8 Functions of Muscle

If I could only teach coaches and athletes one principle, it would be Load Management (LM). In your amazing body muscles play 8 roles for the physicality required of whole body dynamic action. Training all 8 functions helps build the most robust and skilled musculature while injury proofing clients. Discover also 10 biomechanical strategies that help you safely manage the most load and resistance in particular during full body 3D lifts.  Learn 100% actionable methods, mechanics and principles you can begin to deploy in the trenches Monday after the Summit.

LM is sometimes a volume consideration term. In this lecture and workshop LM refers to our ability to manage a load vertically down into the body, a line of pull horizontally across the body and also ground-up to handle our body mass (and weight we lift) into the ground. Deploying 10 mechanical LM strategies can make strength training kinder with much less orthopedic cost while being harder on the muscles, brain, and fascia where we want to stimulate max adaptations. This accelerates growth now and keeps you healthy and strong for the lifespan.

Mastering Core Training

Having a strong/stable core is the foundation of any good strength training program. In this lecture and workshop, Dr. Ulm will teach attendees not only how the core works, but how to cue a proper brace for maximal lifting, and how to effectively program core training for their clients and athletes. This will not only boost results (performance), but reduce the risk of injury as well. Attendees will leave this workshop more confident in their ability to train their athletes and feel ready to implement the concepts covered immediately.

All That Is Breathing

The popularization of breathing over the last many years has been well documented and highly warranted.  While the training and rehab world mainly identifies with breathing as it relates to the function of the core, breathing has many other uses in human performance.  Uses for influencing the nervous system, getting ramped up for performance, and zeroing in on recovery will all be discussed.

Vector Based Training to Optimize Fascial Resiliency

One of the most exciting things about the fast-growing field of fascia research is that is a relatively young science in the field of strength and conditioning. And now we can explore the implications. In this talk we will take a deep dive into fascia, what it is, and why it matters in human movement. The talk will simplify this complex topic into the fundamental principles of vector-based training by explaining how to influence the vectors by movement pattern, direction, angles, speeds and loads. You will learn how using vector variability affects the viscoelasticity and tensile properties of the fascia to create a more robust fascia system to support your body through wide range of movement patterns.

The fact is – once you understand the fundamental principles of fascia and how those principles drive the vector-based training strategies, you will start to make your own connections and discoveries. You will take the latest research and apply it in your own unique ways to solve the challenges in front of you, just like I did. That’s how we evolve, that’s how we create the future, and that’s how we optimize the next generation of athletes to be faster, stronger, and more unbreakable (Resilient).
