Beyond the Rotator Cuff: New Methods of Shoulder Health & Performance

Shoulder injuries are far more common than many would believe, especially compared to familiar issues like low back pain. However, research has explained, “After low back pain and knee pain, shoulder pain has been estimated to be the third most common musculoskeletal presentation in primary care”. The prognosis for people presenting with musculoskeletal shoulder pain varies widely between individuals with, on average, 50% of people with shoulder pain still reporting symptoms 6 months after presenting in primary care. In addition to pain, functional disabilities are common and can interfere with work, hobbies, social, and sporting activities and may also be associated with psychological distress and reduced quality of life. This session is designed to help coaches and therapists look beyond the old ideas of isolating muscles like the rotator cuff, EMG tests, and other muscles of the shoulder and use the most current research to better understand how to restore and train the shoulder for optimal health and performance.

Managing Pain Through Better Exercise and Movement Decisions

Are you making the right choice at the right time? First, you need the right information, and that comes from asking the right questions. In this session, Lee Burton and Gray Cook take exercise decisions back to the very basics of health and wellness. The future of health and fitness depends on our ability to measure wellness using functional standards. But how do we do that? Lee and Gray look at eight domains of wellness to properly answer the question “what should I work on today?” You will learn how to structure screening to focus on your (or your client’s) greatest opportunities in the domains of Breathing Quality, Sleep Quality, Nutritional Awareness, Movement Health, Behavioral Health, Physical Activity, Body Composition and Injury History. This holistic view, with the addition of the FMS-developed algorithm, will prevent you from getting the first step wrong when seeking any corrective actions or development endeavors. The New Science of Low Back Pain

Even though low back pain is recognized as the MOST common musculoskeletal problem in the world, our ability to truly help people with low back pain has not proven to be very effective. About 75% of people with intense chronic low back pain report disability. We are missing the challenge of a low back pain being a multi-factorial problem. The new science of low back pain is showing us that the issue isn’t just core stability, mobility training, or many of our physical goals. Realizing that low back pain is related to an integrated model of physical, psychological, and social factors how should coaches now approach programs to address the complexity of low back pain? During this session Josh will break down the new science of low back pain solutions and how you can practically apply your training and educate clients to empower them to better results.

Recovery & Regeneration: Promoting and Programming Recovery for Enhanced Performance

While the study and deployment of recovery and regeneration strategies goes back to the 1980’s, podcasts and social media have made cold plunges, saunas, and the likes commonplace. With these commonplace strategies also comes a misunderstanding surrounding the technicalities and nuances to the usage of these modalities. Furthermore, ambiguity prevails around recovery modalities and their associated prescription. From rock mats to breathing to cold plunges, understanding regeneration techniques, their purpose, and their application, will provide a better return of investment to the programming you employ for those you train.

Connecting Assessment & Training with Skill

Our job as coaches is to prescribe training that will enhance an athlete’s ability to perform their skill/sport. One key component in this process is the ability to identify compensatory strategies within the assessment. While we have the best of intentions to improve upon these limitations, many times our training programs will unintentionally reinforce these compensatory strategies because we forget to link our assessment back to skill. In this lecture and hands on session, we will discuss an important universal principle that links skill to the assessment and training process.

The Power of Constraints in Rehab & Training

The concept of “constraints” in human movement and performance can take on several different meanings. Some of these can be limitations which need to be addressed and overcome for the client to make progress, while others are the judicious use of physical constraints to help improve movement capacity. There can be societal, psychological, and physical constraints influencing rehab and training programming, as well as session design and flow which may be limiting progress and outcomes. This lecture will discuss in depth some of these concepts and provide specific examples of ways to help recognize, address, and implement strategies to help overcome these obstacles. The hands-on session will discuss more specific ways to introduce physical constraints during rehab and training sessions to help dramatically improve smoother transitions between phases of a client’s program.

Stability is Movement Ability: The Qualities Your Athletes Are Missing to Become an Elite Mover

The best athletes in the world are distinguished by their exceptional movement capabilities so how you move is how you prove day in and day out. However, achieving elite movement goes beyond what we believe it to be. When athletes specialize in a particular sport, they gradually lose the diversity, systems, movement patterns, abilities and positions they either once possessed (or didn’t build at all) and now find themselves repeatedly performing the same motions over and over again. Coupled with a subpar training program, this can lead to an unstable foundation, risking poor performance and potential injury. It is crucial to understand how we can continuously nurture the fundamental movement patterns that define us as human beings first, athletes second. In this presentation and hands on session, you will learn how to expose, progress, and challenge your athletes within the “buckets of movement” they are missing from their training to ultimately upgrade their movement bandwidth, coordination, strength, preparation and on court efficiency to drastically improve performance and mitigate injury risk.

How To Create a Gym Culture (On Purpose)

"Culture" has quickly become a point of focus in the business world. While numerous definitions and descriptions exist for what constitutes "Culture," there is a noticeable lack of frameworks providing guidance on the "how-to" of constructing a culture that people can't stop talking about. Legendary Coach Bill Walsh once said, "The culture precedes positive results. It doesn’t get tacked on as an afterthought on your way to the victory stand. Champions behave like champions before they’re champions: they have a winning standard of performance before they are winners." This lecture will give you the tools you need to build a winning culture, on purpose. (Lecture Only)

Constraints Based Coaching

Wouldn’t it be helpful to have an assistant coach who always has your back, supports your vision and looks out for the best interest of your athletes? You’re in for a nice surprise, because you already have one! That assistant coach comes in the form of the tools you use and the feedback your clients receive from those tools. This is also known as “constraints-based coaching.” Help yourself be a better coach by using tools and positions as “assistant coaches.” This gives you more time to interact with your clients in ways that matter most. The 3 Secret Factors to Strong and Resilient Training & Rehab

Day in and day out, every coach and therapist is looking for way to be better in how they help other people. It’s always a great place to start with global perspectives that govern how we adapt, how we change, how we improve. Words like Mobility, Stability, Strength, Endurance are often the big words that we are always after. However, all of these goals have concepts that expand on the reasons and explanations how why they work and how we can make them even better. In this talk, Charlie will focus primarily on the soft tissues of the body - muscle, tendons, ligaments, nerves, vessels, and fascia. The 3 factors that are shared across all of these tissues are 1) Direction of Force, 2) Pressurization, and 3) Hydraulics. We will discuss these factors of physics in very practicals terms and demonstrations leading to how they enhance all of the adaptations these tissues are involved in. As always, Charlie’s messages are directed for both coaches and therapists working in situations of sport, generally population, rehab.
