Advancing Musculoskeletal Health Through Movement

Musculoskeletal (MSK) health is one of today’s most significant health and performance challenges.
For nearly 30 years, Functional Movement Systems has helped professionals better understand the role movement plays in identifying limitations, guiding interventions, and improving long-term outcomes.

The FMS Summit brings together practical strategies, proven methodologies, and innovative approaches for addressing MSK health across fitness, rehabilitation, performance, and wellness.

Over two days, industry-leading professionals will explore the entire continuum of MSK health—from communicating more effectively with patients and clients to applying specific screening, assessment, exercise, and intervention strategies.

Throughout the Summit, movement serves as the foundation, while recognizing that lasting MSK health requires a broader, individualized approach.

Attendees will leave with actionable tools and strategies they can immediately apply to help people move better, stay active, maintain independence, and perform at their best throughout life.

FEATURED SPEAKERS & SESSIONS:

Alwyn Cosgrove, CSCS
Session: Why We Screen: Building Better Programs and Better Coaches

Alwyn Cosgrove is the owner of Results Fitness, a complete fitness programming and consulting service, and founder of ResultsFitnessUniversity.com. He is one of the country’s most sought-after fitness professionals.

About the Session
This session explores the evolution of the FMS through the lens of nearly three decades of real-world use—from an initial introduction to the system to why it remains a foundational part of practice today.

Learn how FMS results can help guide program design, create consistency in decision-making, and provide a common framework for introducing new staff to a movement-based approach.

Arianne Missimer
Session: The Missing Link: How Breathing and Airway Function Shape Human Performance

Dr. Arianne Missimer, DPT, RD, IFMCP, CSCS, and author of Rise Up, is the founder and CEO of The Movement Paradigm®, an integrative health center that brings together physical therapy, functional and root-cause medicine, nutrition, movement, and nervous system regulation.

A nationally and internationally recognized speaker and educator, Dr. Missimer specializes in translating complex physiology into practical, clinically relevant strategies. Her work explores the interconnected roles of airway function, breathing mechanics, metabolic health, autonomic regulation, and movement in shaping human health and performance.

Through her teaching and clinical practice, Dr. Missimer advances an integrated, root-cause approach that looks beyond isolated symptoms and biomechanics to understand the underlying physiology influencing how the body moves, adapts, recovers, and performs.

About the Session
Breathing and airway function are often overlooked components of human performance, influencing how the body stabilizes, moves, sleeps, recovers, and adapts to stress.

Explore the connection between airway mechanics, sleep quality, nervous system regulation, diaphragmatic function, intra-abdominal pressure, and reflexive core stabilization.

Attendees will learn how to identify potential airway and breathing dysfunction through practical screening strategies, recognize when referral may be appropriate, and apply actionable tools to integrate breathing with core stability, movement, and recovery to optimize human performance.

Kyle Kiesel
Session: The Joint-by-Joint Approach Application to Low Back Pain and Multifidus Muscle Dysfunction — Why Movement Matters

Dr. Kiesel is Senior Director of Functional Programs and Education at Mainstay Medical and Professor Emeritus at the University of Evansville.
His research focuses on motor control of the core and functional movement testing and training. An expert in the rehabilitation of patients with low back pain, he is actively engaged in education and the clinical adoption of Reactiv8, a new technology for treating the condition.

Dr. Kiesel has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents his work nationally and internationally, having taught and conducted research in 20 countries. He consults for professional and college sports teams as well as the military, assisting with injury prevention and implementation of the Functional Movement Systems model.

As a cofounder of FMS, he has extensive experience teaching lecture and lab courses on core training and functional movement appraisal and intervention, including both the Functional Movement Screen and Selective Functional Movement Assessment.

About the Session
The Joint-by-Joint Approach is a biomechanical model describing how functional units throughout the body alternate between a primary role of mobility and stability.

This session examines the concept through the lens of low back pain, exploring how muscle inhibition develops and contributes to altered core muscle function.

Attendees will also review new research linking lumbar multifidus dysfunction to low back pain and explore how impairment of the multifidus relates to broader movement dysfunction.

Simple tests of multifidus muscle function will be demonstrated that can be integrated into a routine functional movement assessment, helping clinicians identify and address this impairment when present.

Greg Dea
Session: Well Beyond the Screen — How Accessible Movement Screening Reached Elite-Level Player Availability and Tracked the Scoreboard

Greg Dea is a titled Sports Physiotherapist (APA) and IFSPT-registered International Sports Physical Therapist whose career includes serving as Head Physical Therapist to the China Women’s National Volleyball Team during a World Cup gold-medal campaign.

His experience spans elite programs in Shanghai and Tianjin, injury-prevention work with the Australian Army, and consultant physiotherapy for the UK Ministry of Defence and British Forces Germany.

As Head of Medical Services at Frankston Football Club from 2021–2024, he built a screening-led wellness system that pushed squad availability past the elite AFL benchmark.

An FMS/SFMA instructor and FMS Clinical Fellowship Advisory Board member, Greg has completed approximately 70 teaching engagements across seven countries.

About the Session
This session explores how a semi-professional Australian football club used movement screening to build an accessible player-wellness system and achieve injury and player-availability outcomes comparable to elite-level programs.

Through pre-activity baseline testing and proactive management of movement-related risk factors, the club was able to reduce injury recurrence, protect player availability, and demonstrate how keeping athletes available can directly support performance on the field.

Lisa Chase
Session: You Can’t Scale Excellence Without Alignment

Lisa Chase, PT, CFMM, OMPT, Astym Certified, is a nationally recognized physical therapist, author, educator, and Founder & CEO of Back 2 Normal Physical Therapy.

With more than 35 years of experience in orthopedic manual therapy, sports medicine, and human performance, Lisa is known for her whole-body approach to identifying the root causes of pain, restoring movement, and optimizing performance.

She has worked with professional and elite athletes worldwide and has served in leadership and medical roles with the WTA Tour, Grand Slam tournaments, and the Olympic Games.

Lisa is also the author of beresponsible™: Because the System Isn’t and creator of the Whole-Body Healing Method & Certification.

About the Session
High standards alone don’t create a 5-star culture—the right people, shared beliefs, and aligned practices do.

Drawing from 35 years of lessons in physical therapy, professional sports, education, and business leadership, Lisa shares how the principles she uses to evaluate movement and heal the whole body became the foundation for building a high-performing, 5-star team.

She’ll connect lessons from the WTA Tour, Functional Movement Systems, her 5 Pillars of Recovery, and the Whole-Body Healing Method to show how leaders can create greater alignment, stronger team buy-in, and a culture that moves together.
