Why Fitness is Failing at Fat Loss

With Josh Henkin & Jessica Bento

For decades, the fitness industry has reduced fat loss to “calories in, calories out.” Yet despite countless workouts, diets, and high-intensity coaching, obesity rates remain high and lasting results are rare. Why? Because fat loss isn’t just math it’s biology, psychology, and the nervous system.

One of the biggest missing pieces is stress. Research shows Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can disrupt neuroendocrine development and self-regulation, significantly increasing obesity risk. These early disruptions often carry into adulthood, driving poor eating habits, chronic stress responses, and difficulty sticking with healthy routines.

Chronic sympathetic activation the prolonged “fight or flight” state—also fuels obesity, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk. Ironically, fitness programs that demand harder, faster, more may only worsen this stress.

This webinar, led by strength coach Josh Henkin and physical therapist Jessica Bento, who together bring over 50 years of experience, explores overlooked strategies rooted in nervous system regulation, stress adaptation, and healthier relationships with food and exercise, offering tools to create sustainable, long-term fat loss.
